THE EQUALIZER
"Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer." This 1985-89 CBS series starred imposing British actor Edward Woodward as guilt-ridden ex-espionage agent Robert McCall (a character with more than a passing resemblance to the troubled government assassin Woodward portrayed in the 1967-72 British spy series Callan). For four seasons, The Equalizer's McCall used his professional skills to aid "helpless people beset by human predators in the urban jungle, usually free of charge."
The dark, yet driving theme music was created by Stewart Copeland, whose scores also include the films Rumblefish (1983), Highlander II (1991) and Wall Street (1993). Best known as drummer for The Police, Copeland directed the recent DVD release Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out (Hip-O Records), compiled from his Super 8 footage for an intimate look at what it was like to be a member of one of the world's biggest rock bands from 1978 to 1984.
