A Look at This F*cking Hipster entry bears a stunning resemblance to a couple of my Palace strips

Nearly a year ago, I drew a pair of Palace strips in which Daryl snarks about his hipster co-worker Renfrew and his new ride.

The Palace: Photographed in Single-Panelvision 70, Chapter 4 by Jimmy J. Aquino
Last week, I clicked to Look at This F*cking Hipster--stand-up Joe Mande's entertaining blog-turned-upcoming book that collects photos of hipsters committing all sorts of crimes against fashion--and was particularly amused by the December 10 entry for some reason.

Hey, it's Renfrew!

20 favorite Current TV stories (Part 2)

Previously on A Fistful of Soundtracks: The Blog: #20-#11.

From left to right: The Manic Pixie Dream Girls in this capture from 'Ode to the Indie' are Kate Winslet from Eternal Sunshine, Margarita Levieva from Adventureland, Anna Paquin from The Squid and the Whale and Ellen Page from Juno.
My favorite Current TV show is a recent addition to the channel's lineup, The Rotten Tomatoes Show, a unique movie review show that's reminiscent of both the earlier years of G4's X-Play (the hosts participate in movie parody sketches) and ReelzChannel's Movie Mob (it features webcam reviews that are less obnoxious and insipid than the ones on Movie Mob because they're submitted by film bloggers who have a sense of film history and professional comedians, instead of anonymous morons who think they're funny and make the review about themselves instead of the movie). Two of my selections on this post are examples of why The Rotten Tomatoes Show is the most entertaining movie review show since the time Ebert threatened to sit on Siskel.

10. "YouTube's Worst Parents"
Brett Erlich's "Viral Video Film School" is always a highlight of infoMania.

9. "Hipsters in Space"
When's South Park going to skewer hipsters? SuperNews! beat them to the punch.

8. "Beatboxing the Flute"
One thing that's missing from this piece about Nathan "Flutebox" Lee is his ill cover of the Knight Rider theme. I assume the music clearance fee would cost more than a new chassis for KITT.

7. "Hookers are the Best Roles in Town by Ellen Fox"
The Rotten Tomatoes Show co-host sardonically sings about Hollywood's fixation on hoes-with-hearts-of-gold. On the shallow side, Fox looks hotter in the Pretty Woman hooker outfit than Julia Roberts does.

6. "Joe Gets Game"
Even though I know very little about Harry Potter (the first movie was so ponderous I never got into the rest of the franchise), Joe's bad pick-up lines in Potter slang are amusing.

5. "Blue Scholars Seattle"
This mini-doc featuring Geo and DJ Sabzi is actually more about Seattle than Blue Scholars, but any segment with them is worthwhile viewing. The video title makes the duo sound like a bad prime-time procedural franchise (Blue Scholars: Seattle, Blue Scholars: Miami...).

4. "La Vida Flamenco"
Damn.

3. "Sexy Scientist"
Double damn.

2. "Ode to the Indie by Ellen & Brett"
There's one frequent indie comedy element that's missing from this Rotten Tomatoes Show list of indie clichés: "Oh, those funny-talking yellow-faced and brown-faced people!" humor.

1. "Sarah Haskins in Target Women: Cleaning"
Each week on infoMania, Haskins' great "Target Women" segment shows how advertising panders to female viewers. The funniest of these "Target Women" pieces spoofs dumb bathroom cleaning product commercials.

Stuff White People Like But This Brown Man Can't Stand #3: Gosselin press coverage

Lord Douchebag! Without Lady Douchebag! I'd like to see The Amazing Chan Clan from the old Hanna-Barbera cartoon of the same name get into a fight to the death with the Gosselin kids. The Chans will easily pwn the Gosselins.
Why are these two famous? (Come to think it, why is anybody from the casts of these lame, heavily scripted reality shows famous?)

What's dead-behind-the-eyes Jon Gosselin's big talent? Modeling crappy, overpriced T-shirts?

What's Kate's big talent? Having a gigantic, super-stretched-out twat?

BicoastalBitchin bitchslaps racist hipsters

The only thing more unsanitary than this skank's tongue is, uh, Tila Tequila's tongue. The best post I read this week comes from the Asian American blog BicoastalBitchin. Their March 27 post about the only kinds of Asians who are represented in Vice magazine ranks with King of the Hill's "Lady and Gentrification" episode, the SuperNews! "Hipsters in Space" short and My Boys' "Douchebag in the City" ep as a great and inspired moment of hipster-bashing:
1. Hot Asian girl.
2. Asian girl of any look, as long as she's coked out and sweaty next to a white guy in an abandoned warehouse party.
3. Asian dude who may or may not be recently Fresh Off the Boat or in some crazy, embarrassing situation. Or an ultra-uber-super hipster dude (see #19 for an "Asian dude rockin' a marching band jacket" DO'S). But mostly losers getting a DON'T.

Please click through each category to get a link to the pic/caption. It won't take you long to figure out that
Vice writers are all mid-twenties, hipster-geek, Asian fetish having, small east coast liberal arts college alumni from New Haven/Palos Verdes with tons of family money wasted away on blow and PBRs in their Williamsburg/Echo Park studio apartment shared by 4, but only until they're sick of NYC/LA and decide to take over their dad's multi-million dollar ad agency.
The Renfrew character in my webcomic The Palace is based on these pretentious, skeevy and yellow fever-afflicted douches who--as the BcB folks note in other posts--enjoy racist hipster eyewear (or tees) that they defend as "ironic" and dress like they don't give a damn.
